Kairouan and El Jem: The One Not to Miss

If you only book one day, make it this one. You start at the Great Mosque of Kairouan, one of the oldest in North Africa, then drive 45 minutes through olive groves to the El Jem amphitheatre, where you can walk the tunnels under the arena. It takes about 1 h 30 to reach Kairouan, and you are back at your hotel around 16:00. See the full plan on our Kairouan and El Jem day trip page.

El Jem held about 35,000 spectators in the 3rd century.

Carthage and Sidi Bou Said: Full Day or Half Day

The capital is about an hour away on the motorway, so you have two options. The full day adds the souks of the Tunis medina before Carthage and Sidi Bou Said. The half day skips the medina and has you back at your hotel by about 12:45, which suits families and anyone with an afternoon plan.

Dougga and Bulla Regia: Worth the Longer Drive

Dougga is the best-kept Roman town in North Africa, with a capitol, a theatre and whole streets on a hillside. Bulla Regia adds villas built underground to escape the heat, with mosaics still in place. However, it is the longest day at about 2 h 30 each way, so we leave at 07:30 and keep it for spring or autumn.

Close to Hammamet: Cap Bon, Zaghouan and Friguia Park

Three easy days sit within an hour of Hammamet. The Cap Bon loop takes in the fort of Kelibia, the Punic town of Kerkouane and the sea caves of El Haouaria. Zaghouan pairs a Berber village with the Roman Temple of Waters. Meanwhile, Friguia Park is a half day of giraffes and bird shows only 30 minutes away.

Sousse and Monastir: An Easy First Day

Sousse is about 1 h 15 south, and once you are there the stops sit close together. You walk the Sousse medina and its ribat, see the marina of Port El Kantaoui and finish at the Monastir ribat by the sea. As a result, it makes a gentle first day that shows you Tunisia at an easy pace. Read more on our Sousse and Monastir day trip page.
