Day Trips From Tunis: Carthage, Dougga and Beyond

Day trips from Tunis start with a big advantage: Carthage and Sidi Bou Said are only about 30 minutes away, and Dougga and Zaghouan are closer from the capital than from the coast. This guide covers the eight days we run from Tunis, with real drive times, the price for the whole car and the trips that are better booked from somewhere else.

Here are our day trips from Tunis, closest first. Each price covers the whole car for one to four people, with fuel, tolls and pickup at your hotel or address included. Note that the coast days to Sousse and El Jem are long from the capital, so they suit travellers who stay in Tunis for the whole trip.

Carthage and Sidi Bou Said: The Easiest Day From Tunis

From the city centre, Carthage is about 30 minutes away, which makes this the cheapest day we run from Tunis. The Carthage ruins are spread over several areas, so a driver who takes you from gate to gate saves a lot of walking. The half day is back by lunch, while the full day adds the Tunis medina.

Dougga and Bulla Regia: Two Hours West

Dougga is about two hours from Tunis, closer than from any other pickup city. You walk the capitol, the theatre and the streets of a Roman town on a hillside, then see the underground villas of Bulla Regia. That said, it is still a full day, so leave early and bring water and a hat in summer.

Zaghouan and the Temple of Waters: A Quiet Escape

Zaghouan sits about 45 minutes south of the capital. The day pairs the abandoned Berber village of Zriba Olia with the Roman Temple of Waters, where the aqueduct that fed Carthage began. As a result, it is a calm day with mountain air and very few crowds.

Cap Bon and the Coast From Tunis

Cap Bon is about 1 h 30 from Tunis, with the fort of Kelibia, the Punic town of Kerkouane and the sea caves of El Haouaria. However, Sousse, Monastir, Kairouan and El Jem are 2 to 2 h 30 away, so those days run long from the capital. If you also stay in Hammamet or Sousse, book them from there instead.

Day Trips From Tunis Without a Car: What Works

Some day trips from Tunis are easy alone. For example, the TGM light rail runs from Tunis Marine to Carthage and Sidi Bou Said. The catch is that the Carthage sites are spread out, and Dougga or Zaghouan have no simple public transport.
