History Excursions: Carthage, El Jem, Kairouan and Dougga

Most travellers come for the ruins, and Tunisia has some of the best in the Mediterranean, including several UNESCO World Heritage Sites. Each of these days pairs two or three sites that sit close together, so you spend more time walking and less time in the car. For example, Carthage and Sidi Bou Said are only ten minutes apart.

Coast, Mountain and Family Days

Not every day needs a ruin. These excursions are shorter or lighter on walking, so they work well as a rest day between two long ones. Meanwhile, Friguia Park is the easiest half day if you travel with young children.

Which Excursion Should You Choose?

The right day depends on how many days you have and who travels with you. In short, start with the big sites and fill the gaps with shorter days. Here is how we would plan it.

Excursions in Tunisia: Questions Answered

These are the questions travellers ask most before they book a day trip in Tunisia.

What are the best excursions in Tunisia?

For history, Kairouan and El Jem, then Carthage and Sidi Bou Said, then Dougga. For a lighter day, the Cap Bon coast or Sousse and Monastir. With young children, Friguia Park.

How much do excursions in Tunisia cost?

With us, from €45 to €120 per car for one to four people from Hammamet, and up to €200 for a group of twelve. Hotel coach tours often cost €55 to €100 per person, so a private car is usually cheaper from two people.

Is it better to book excursions at the hotel or online?

A hotel coach tour is fine if you travel alone and like a group. From two people up, a private car usually costs less, starts when you want and never stops at shops unless you ask.

Can you do a Sahara excursion from Hammamet?

Not in one day. Douz and the dunes are about six hours each way, so a real Sahara trip needs at least two days. For one day, Kairouan and El Jem show you the best of inland Tunisia.

Is it safe to take day trips in Tunisia?

The main sites and resort towns welcome millions of visitors a year and are generally calm. Check the latest UK travel advice for Tunisia before you go. With a private driver you never wait at a station or a roadside.

How long is a typical day trip?

Between 4 hours for Friguia Park and about 10 hours for Dougga and Bulla Regia, door to door from Hammamet. Most full days leave at 08:00 and are back between 15:00 and 18:00.
